Local History Through Storytelling

Walking and Talking Through History

An innovative, community-focused, educational media project in Beaver County helping us better recognize and appreciate local history within our communities.  In particular, this project shows us how to understand and interpret ways in which history has shaped our current physical surroundings and our social, cultural, economic, and political lives.

Main Street Stories

Nearly every community has a “main street” that harbors its most vibrant social, economic, and political activity.  We’ve traditionally referred to these corridors as being “down town,” marking their most common characteristic–being at the geographical, urban, and commercial center of our lives.

At least this was true before the forces of mid 20th century suburbia hollowed out our cities and towns, leaving many main streets exposed like a fragile but still intact spine holding together a mass of urban decay. It’s a repugnant image, of course, as is the sight of dilapidated buildings, abandoned storefronts, broken glass, crumbling sidewalks, and vacant lots filled with refuse and the rusty still-life remains of what was once an active community.

But there’s important and relevant history in those abandoned buildings and vacant lots.  It shines through in the once ornate but now crumbling facades. What’s written on that building’s nameplate? There’s a date from a hundred years ago.  Why were these old buildings built with such artistic flourish?  Once upon a time, there must have been a lot of wealth invested in our community.

But where are the shops now?  The bustling crowds?  The entertaining nightlife?  Where are the buses, cabs, trolley cars, parades, and the political rallies?   Where did it all go?

There are stories hidden in these historical palimpsests. Rising up through these worn out ruins are stories of who we used to be . . . and who we are today as a community.
