BETTIE COLE	TITLE Their Story: The History of Blacks/African Americans in Sewickley and Edgeworth DESCRIPTION Interviews found in book “Their Story: The History of Blacks/African Americans in Sewickley and Edgeworth,” published in 2000, which tells the history of Blacks and African Americans in Sewickley and Edgeworth. Bettie Cole interviewed more than 100 people and accumulated more than 200 tapes and transcripts. Alt. description: The African Americans of Sewickley Valley have a history as rich and deep-rooted as the valley itself. Originally pioneered by Quakers and abolitionists sentimental to the cause of enslaved men, Sewickley is noted for containing routes and safe houses for those on the Underground Railroad. Known as an affluent bedroom community, Sewickley is considered the wealthiest municipality along the entire 98-mile stretch of the Ohio River. Early residents brought black servants with them to serve as domestics. As construction increased, many African Americans migrated primarily from Virginia and Kentucky to work in the area as builders. The organization of Sewickley's first African American mission marked the start of a strong and lively course for the African American community. Beginning with Jim Robinson in 1823 through the culmination of today's Come on Home annual reunion, African Americans in Sewickley Valley documents the life and ambition of the African Americans who grew as a vital part of Sewickley's community today. WILTROUT, JULIA Access the Interview	TITLE Julia Wiltrout DESCRIPTION Mrs. Julia Wiltrout has lived in West Mayfield for more than 62 years, starting on her wedding day to her husband George. Together they raised three daughters and actively served the community in many ways. George was a councilman, mayor, jubilee coordinator, and volunteer fireman for forty-four years. Julie was involved in helping young families through an organization called “Homemakers,” and she lead a girl scout troop for many years. Her greatest devotion to the borough was through serving for decades as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, providing much needed financial support to the West Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department. Julie and George understood the importance of serving our community, and over the years they devoted themselves selflessly toward making West Mayfield a nicer and safer place to live not just for their family, but everyone who lived in the borough. FARKAS, PAUL Access the Interview - Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5	TITLE Farkas Family Oral History: Paul Farkas DESCRIPTION On November 29, 2020, the day before he turned 90, my brother Jeff and I recorded a conversation with our father, Paul. While growing up we heard many of these stories about the Farkas family, but we also learned some new things despite our dad's failing memory. Although he frequently confuses names, dates, and the order of events, our father still maintains strong and vivid emotional connections to his memories. His face would light up with joy talking about the good times, but at other times his eyes would well up with sadness as he recalled the hardships he and his family endured--the most hurtful being the abusive nature of his own father. These condensed segments are drawn down from more than three and half hours of recorded audio. They have been edited so that most of the content is relevant to the extended Farkas family. DESCRIPTION Robert MacNeil: "For our final focus section tonight we turn to an aspect of last week's Presidential election that will cause a lot of anguished debate among the Democrats -- in fact, it's already begun -- the role of organized labor. Was labor an albatross or a life-support system for Democratic candidate Walter Mondale? In an historic move, the AFL-CIO endorsed him even before he was nominated. Together with the endorsement big labor pulled out all the stops, especially money and manpower. But in the end the union leadership delivered less than half of their rank-and-file votes to Mondale. And well before the election there were mixed feelings among some union members about having a candidate chosen by union leaders. That was a question that Judy Woodruff put to some steelworkers at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania." RUPERT, ROBERT Bob Rupert: In My Own Words	TITLE Bob Rupert: In My Own Words DESCRIPTION Bob Rupert of Clinton, Pennsylvania was working as an aircraft mechanic for a major airline when he was called up during the Vietnam War. It was a good job. He was a well trained technician. But the army needed infantrymen in 1968. Not long after landing in Vietnam and being assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry’s 11th Aviation Group, Warrant Officer Herman C. Bliss noticed Bob’s aircraft experience and recruited him as his crew chief—and sometimes co-pilot. FRANCIS, JOHN John Francis: In My Own Words	TITLE John Francis: In My Own Words DESCRIPTION John Francis of Blairsville, Pennsylvania was an engineering student at Penn State during WWII. Sign up to join the army now, an ROTC commander urged him, and he’d get some credit for his schooling before being drafted. It seemed like a deal. After basic and artillery training, John was sent to aviation school with the Army Air Corps. At D+60, John landed at Omaha Beach. He recalls the left-over carnage, and just beyond the bluffs “there were crosses for soldiers almost as far as you could see.” While being transported from Normandy to Italy, John’s DC-3 crashed into a mountain. He was badly injured, but he remembers very little about the ordeal after blacking out. Some men were killed. Others barely survived. An eyewitness reported that John repeatedly ran into the wreckage and flames, saving the lives of fellow soldiers. It was an act of bravery for which he was bestowed the Soldier’s Medal—an award outranking the Bronze Star as the highest citation for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959 as an active duty aircraft commander, and he served in the reserves from 1963 to 1973. Judge Livingstone Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He flew 58 combat missions as a navigator and radar bombardier aboard a B-26. For his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (the USAF's 3rd highest award for valor), Commendation Medal, and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. DYGA, ALEX Access the Interview	TITLE Alex Dyga: In My Own Words DESCRIPTION Alex Dyga of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a Pearl Harbor survivor. He joined the Army just months prior to the Japanese attack on the islands. When the attack came, Alex was stationed on Hawaii as a “mule skinner.” He would serve the entire war on Hawaii. Until his death in October 2018, he was one of two living Pittsburgh survivors of Pear Harbor. CHALFANT, DANA Access the Interview	TITLE Dana Chalfant: In My Own Words DESCRIPTION Charles "Dana" Chalfant of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania served in the US Navy Reserve during WWII from 1942 to 1946 as a junior officer aboard the anti-submarine patrol cruiser USS PC 578 in what many sailors humorously called the "Donald Duck Navy." At the age of 28, Ensign Chalfant became the commanding officer of his ship. Mr. Chalfant and USS PC-578 served exclusively in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, participating as the Yellow Beach control vessel for Iwo Jima landings during February 1945. CISTOLO, FELIX Felix Cistolo: In My Own Words	TITLE Felix Cistolo: In My Own Words DESCRIPTION Felix Cistolo was drafted in 1942 and assigned to the 80th Infantry Division. He arrived in France on Aug. 4, 1944, and was sent immediately into combat at Falaise Gap, where the Allies killed 10,000 German troops and trapped another 50,000, although some 20,000 Germans troops managed to escape to fight another day. As part of Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh’s celebration of National Day of Listening 2012, we recorded Felix Cistolo of Ellwood City, PA talking with his grandsons Aaron and Adam Nye about his military service in the US Army during WW II, including the Battle of the Bulge and being wounded. The recording took place in November 2012 in the Heinz History Center. CAPONE, JOSEPH Access the Interview	TITLE Joseph Capone: That Happened DESCRIPTION In 1945, Joseph Capone’s outfit was the first to discover Dora-Mittelbau, one of thirty slave labor subcamps near the town of Nordhausen. Its inmates worked to build secret underground factories for the production of V-2 missiles. By 1944, nearly 12,000 slave laborers were confined underground in dangerous, unsanitary conditions. As they died or became too ill to work, the inmates were removed to Dora-Mittlebau and surrounding subcamps. It is believed that Dora-Mittlebau had one of the highest mortality rates of any concentration camp. In this audio short, listen as Mr. Capone gives witness to this horror.
