Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast – Episode 24

Brad Hoopes | World War II Veterans Memories

On Episode 24 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast,  we have a conversation with Brad Hoopes, award-winning author, oral historian, and founder of the Northern Colorado Veteran History Project.

Brad Hoopes lives in northern Colorado.  He’s just an ordinary guy, he admits.  But he’s on an extraordinary mission.

After reading Tom Brokaw’s book, The Greatest Generation, and discovering the National Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, Brad decided that he needed to record and preserve the stories of WWII veterans in his own community of Ft. Collins, Colorado.

Now, 14 years and 500 interviews later, Brad manages the Northern Colorado Veteran History Project.

Brad is not a veteran himself, but he believes that these special citizens deserve our attention.  They need to have their stories preserved and shared, he admits, as a way to honor “the invaluable contributions to protecting us and preserving our way of life.”

“By saving these stories,” Brad asserts, “these veterans will never be forgotten as their stories will always be available for present and future generations to know and honor.   These stories are a very important part of history and must be saved before they are lost forever.”
